She was a member of the Monmouth Mass Choir, which served as a branch of the New Jersey Mass Choir.

Val has served as a director and the musician at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church since 1987. In 1998 she served as musician, director, and workshop coordinator at Federal Prison Camp Atwood in Lexington, KY; the workshop resulted in a 75 voice choir comprised of resident of the prison; Val considers this time as one of her most valuable in serving others.
